4th July 1991: Assaye Barracks, Tidworth.

From April 1987 the regiment was based in Wolfenbuttel, Germany in the role of the 1st Armoured Division Medium Reconnaissance Regiment. In November 1989, following the sudden thaw in East-West relations and the opening of the Iron Curtain (which led to the reunification of Germany), the reason for the regiment’s location near the Inner Germany Border became defunct. The regiment moved to Assaye Barracks, Tidworth. They recruit in Wales and the Border counties.

Over half the regiment was deployed on Operation GRANBY in Saudi Arabia. Initially A Squadron, with 134 men under the command of Major H L A Macdonald, deployed as the reconnaissance force for 7th Armoured Brigade. By the start of the ground war 264 QDG were on active service in the Gulf, with jobs ranging from Divisional Staff officers to Romanian Hospital signallers. ‘A’ Squadron had the honour of leading the advance of 7 Brigade into Kuwait to secure the Basra road. They were the first formed British element into Iraq and beyond.
