D Squadron 22 SAS Regiment on the afternoon of 4th March 1991, returning from operations inside Iraq. The Squadron re-crossed the border close to a Saudi National Guard fort at the exact point it had entered Iraq on the night of 20th January 1991.

The Squadron, with reinforcements from A, B and R Squadrons, was organised as five troops, each comprising four SAS 110 Landrovers armed with a variety of weapons including GPMG, .50 Browning, M19 and Milan. The fifth troop, designated 20 Troop, was made up from the Squadron Headquarters, reinforced by members of the other four troops; it included the two Medium Support Vehicles carrying the Squadron’s heavy equipment.

The Squadron operated behind enemy lines for 42 days, initially as five independent troops, and then as two half-squadron groups: D11 comprising 16 and 17 Troops, and D20 comprising 18, 19 and 20 Troops. The Squadron made a significant strategic contribution to Operation DESERT STORM whilst sustaining only two minor casualties.
