1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards: HQ Squadron, Umm Qasr   1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards: HQ Squadron, Umm Qasr

The US Marine Corps seized the old TV station outside the port of Umm Qasr, then handed over the site and their Iraqi prisoners to the QDG Commanding Officer’s tactical group before continuing the fight in Umm Qasr, which went on for another couple of days.

HQ Squadron of the QDG with its attachments, including 129 (Dragon) Battery tactical group, formed the nucleus of the Prisoner-of-War (POW) handling organisation. Two squadrons of the Royal Engineers constructed the POW camp. The Duke of Wellington’s Regiment provided a guard force.

The third man from left is one of the US Marines, who at this period were still wearing their very baggy NBC suits over their uniforms. In the distance is one of their Assault Amphibian Vehicles known by the Marines as ‘AmTracs’, (a shortening of their original designation, ‘amphibious tractor’).

In the centre of the scene is an FV103 Spartan of the QDG Commanding Officer’s tactical group. It has Combat Identification Panels attached, to reduce friendly-fire incidents among allied ground forces. These panels are designed so as to produce a distinct infra-red signature when seen through thermal imaging systems. They were commonly known as IFF panels (Identification, friend or foe).

At left is the Battery Command Vehicle (FV515 Warrior) of 129 (Dragon) Battery RA.

On 7th April 2003, the US Army’s 800th MP Brigade officially took command of the British Prisoner-of-war Holding Area and named it Camp Bucca. HQ Squadron then moved off and took on rear-area security and other duties. The RA Battery Commander’s tactical group remained attached to the squadron.
