'Battle Camp': Infantry Training
‘Battle Camp’ takes place at the Warcop Training Area, Cumbria. Field firing with live ammunition is the final phase of a recruit’s training.
The painting was commissioned in 1996 by the newly formed Infantry Training Centre, Catterick.
I visited Warcop in July and watched the training on a hot day, with not a cloud in the sky. My hosts were disappointed with this. They told me that the place is normally a scene of driving wind and rain, and wanted me to experience these conditions before I painted it. Accordingly, I made another visit later in the year and found the conditions just as they had described.
In the background, ITC Catterick’s first commandant, Colonel Adrian Freer (in maroon beret) is watching. Commissioned into the Parachute Regiment, he later commanded 5 Airborne Brigade in Kosovo, 1999, where I was to meet him again.
The painting hangs in the Officers Mess, Infantry Training Centre Catterick, Vimy Barracks, Scotton Road, Catterick.
