Bjelesnica detachment, Bosnia, 1995   Bjelesnica detachment, Bosnia, 1995

1995: During Operation HAMDEN the highest communications site was at Bjelesnica, near Mount Igman, above the city of Sarajevo. It is 2,067 metres above sea level.

I visited this rebroadcasting signal station in September 1995. The detachment commander, Captain Dominic Sharkey of the Royal Corps of Signals, can be seen in the foreground. The station was manned by soldiers of 2 Signals Regiment.

The building in the background is at the top of the ski slope created for the Winter Olympic Games, 1984. It had been blown up during the Bosnian conflict.
